Results of the Spring Lake Costco Mentor Study

Author: Swen Nater

Forty-three grade one through three students were isolated as needing special help with reading. Sixty-four percent were described as non-readers. All forty-three children received help once per week for forty-five minutes for eleven weeks--a total of eight hours of instruction. Help was offered one-on-one by Costco employees who had received four hours of Phono-Graphix training and used materials from Reading Reflex. The Qualitative Reading Inventory was administered pre and post. Average gains were eleven months. 93 of the students showed improvement. Costco have not stopped here. Since the completion of this study they have been responsible for the training of over 500 Costco employees who are now working in schools all over the US--teaching children to read.pp
