Interactive Online Phono-Graphix
Certification Course Trainee Comments
Read the comments from those who have taken the course!
On February 6th 2003, Read America launched its new Online Phono-Graphix
Certification Course. Fifty-six participants signed on the afternoon of the
6th, with eager expectation. Since that date over 400 online course participants have received certification in this way. We're very proud of their comments below.
"I feel like I'm back in college again. Boy, is my brain rusty,
but this is so good for it. Thanks!" says course participant and veteran
teacher, Joan Schoppe.
"Thanks Carmen -- your program is fabulous!!!! My son
begs to do his lessons as soon as he wakes up!!! Can it get any better than
this? I think not!!! I especially enjoyed the Martian phonics activity. It
was interesting and quite telling." says Robin Pollard, a computer instructor
on a US Army base.
"I'm really excited about this course," says John Kelly, a
veteran middle school exceptional education teacher in Rhode Island, "When I
attended a lecture where Jack Fletcher (University of Texas) showed MRI scans
on students before and after Phono-Graphix instruction, I knew I had to learn
more."
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be learning Phono-Graphix!" Donna
Rutherford, previously a software support manager, and now a Brain Gym®
Practitioner.
"I am really looking forward to an approach to reading that
will make a big difference to the children. I am pleased to be able to do the
course online so that I can fit it in with everything else - I'm not sure I
would have been able to do it otherwise!" explains Jean Coyle-Larmer, a SENCO
instructor in London, England.
"..I had a very positive experience taking the online course. I had almost instant feedback and completed the course in less than 30 days. I look forward to continuing to use the program with my students.
Kate Hurst, CCC/SLP
Arlington, VA. " - Kate Hurst, Arlington, VA"..I have learned so many things from this program. I have 21 years of teaching experience, a K-12 Reading Endorsement through my Master's Degree and am Reading Recovery trained; however, I have learned so much about helping the at-risk reader (and all readers for that matter) understand how ourlanguage works in a matter-of-fact, hand-on way. My daughter had struggled in first grade and her school used this program with her. Within weeks she was caught up with everyone else, since she had changed schools and the expectations were much higher. The kids enjoy the activities, mastery becomes apparent and it is wonderful to see them use what they have learned in their reading. I found the examples in the training very helpful and am almost sorry it is over. What is not over is using Phono-Graphix as an intervention to the readers in our school who need to accelerate to reach the levels of their peers...I can see myself using this for many years to come! Thanks for thinking outside the box and providing materials for those kids who need a different way of learning!" - Cynthia Pape, Saginaw, MI "..This course was wonderful to use with those few students who were not responding to "normal" classroom instruction. Phono-Graphix provided intense specific instruction in the area my students needed most. The online training lessons were clear to follow and the articles and presentations that went along with the program allowed the trainee to understand activities, see them demonstrated and ask any questions about the program. I would highly recommend taking this training. However, I think it is imperative to have students to be working with while going through the training - this is how teachers will learn how applicable it really is! " - Kristen Miller, Arlington, VA "..This course is very beneficial for both normal and dyslexic children. It teaches us to read from very basic to difficult words. It emphasizes on the basic skills that needed for English reading. You are not needed to memorize the difficult special sign for phonetic sounds, but just learning the sounds as written as normal alphabet letter.
For normal children, it helps to improve their reading and spelling skills. For dyslexic children, it really helps by making them knowing how to read, to read properly, and able to spell accordingly. After run through the program, children are able to read story books by themselves, and this help their understanding on what have been taught in the book.
Besides, it also beneficial to adults whose are not good in English speaking. You will be able to read by guessing the sound in the word although the word is long, and might be new to you. Furthermore, you will find your pronunciation on English speaking is better, as you have to read correctly to the children during the teaching progress.
This course is really useful and enjoyable.
" - Hon Jin Yun, Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan "..I really enjoyed the course and felt it was warm, fun, innovative, informative, and witty. I encourage others to take it, and I feel that the founders should be very proud of their excellent work." - Steven Wenger, Chino Hills, CA "..The course is extremely helpful in working with students who need to learn the basics of reading and spelling. My students loved it.
It makes reading into a game which they can easily figure out.
Be prepared to spend some time doing the program. It is not like a workshop where you go and learn strategies and then try to remember how to implement them. Doing the on-line course demands that you put into practice what you have learned before you can move on. Once you go through the program it will be hard not to implement it.
" - Mary Coleman, Kensington, MD "..This course has been informative and fun. I have enjoyed working through the instruction and the videos. The examples of real life one-on-one instruction is my favorite part. I have been working through the program with my niece, and I have been amazed at her progress. I am looking forward to working with more students and seeing the amazing progress in their reading also." - Tammy Kinler, Paulina, LA "..I thought this online phonographix course was amazing. The articles and the lessons were very interesting. It was beneficial to be able replay sections. The online example lessons were very informative and effective in helping me understand and demonstrate the concepts." - Jordana Fienberg, Toronto, Ontario "..I've found the online interactive phono-graphix training course useful as the method seems to work with the students I've trained with, and I have managed to fit in the training around my normal working day. " - Brigid Simmons, London, London "..I think that this course has been unspeakably useful. As a reading instructor and a member of a family with an autistic boy and an ADD/dyslexic boy, the concept that letters are pictures of sounds has been like an awakening!" - Amelia Herring, Chino Hills, CA "..I have evidence of tremendous growth out of the 5 students I have taken through the course. One student had a ~250 Lexile on the Scholastic Reading Inventory in November, started with me on Phonographix in January, and scored a 742 Lexile this morning!
" - Deb Herndon, Arkansas City, KS "..This online class has been very beneficial to my teaching. It allowed me to use the skill I was learning about with my students immediately, and then get feedback to see if I was on the right track. I would reccommend it to others." - Kristi Wiebel, Durango, CO "..I think the online training was great. I loved being able to replay sections for clarification. I was put in a position to start working with 20 students in grades 2 to 6 as I was completing the course. Everything was new to me and to them. I did my best. I loved watching the progress. All of them made progress as evidenced from the intake survey. For my older kids I used mostly white boards and moved the lessons along fairly quickly. Overall, it gave quite a few of my students more self esteem as they felt more empowered to approach words. I was only able to work with my students twice a week for 20 minutes from January to April. Unfortunatly, I wasn't informed enough to get the parents on board but I hope to do so next year. Still, it all went well and each student made progress. Thank-you.
" - Elizabeth Engelmann, Southhampton, NY "..Before taking the Phono-Graphix certification course, I thought that I was a great reader but it seems that the Phono-Graphix method makes much more sense than the phonics method I learned as a kid. The idea that letter are pictures of sounds makes better sense to me. I really liked the fact that I received so much support when I ran into problems along the way. I was relieved that the course took into consideration different learning styles by showing cartoons, pictures, animations, text as the text is read to you, demonstrations and hands-on assignments. Overall, I would really recommend this course." - Elvia Trejo, Chino Hills, CA "..This a great, well paced course. Make sure that you take the opportunity to practice these activities with your children. I am looking forward to using this for many years to come." - Leisha Chapman, New Braunfels, TX "..Thought this was a great alternative if you are not able to attend the in-class workshop. I learned a lot and was able to apply many of these techniques with the students I work with." - Ashley Rath, Washington, DC "..I found the course to be very informative. The on-line example sessions were quite helpful in exemplifying the way the lessons should be taught and the materials should be used. This was a fresh new method (for me)of teaching reading and I enjoyed the course." - Becky Zavodny, Caldwell, TX "..Thank-you both for making this course available online. I found it to be easy to follow, and fun. I feel this course was put together well, and is all that I needed to get me started helping kids out there. The only thing I would have added would be a few more demonstration videos and maybe a video to help put the kit together! Thanks again to both of you for all your hard work.
Tessa Neill" - Tessa Neill, Portland, OR "..This is a very helpful course! Take it to help you students to succeed! :)" - Erin Johnson, Roslyn Heights, NY "..Very helpful course. Enjoyed the lesson demonstrations." - Janice Pool, Firestone, CO "..This course is fantastic for anyone teaching reading. It brings the task back to basics, it cuts out all the complexities of spelling rules, long and short vowels etc etc and gets straight to the task. Really worthwhile! Not only do I as a tutor find this beneficial some of my most difficult reluctant readers are really progressing due to Phono-Graphix." - Olivene McDaid, County Tyrone , Northern Ireland "..It has sound basic principles, makes sense, and is much less frustrating for a child struggling to learn to read." - Lisa Kuehnle, Lawrence, MI "..This course clearly presented all of the important concepts of the reading program. It kept my interest and helped me persevere when I might have become over-whelmed with the amount of information that was presented. I think this is an excellent reading program and I am excited to be able to offer this approach to my students, teachers, and parents." - Anna Ankenbruck, Lawrence, MI "..A great course, very worthwhile as you learn much more than you could do on your own just reading the Reading Reflex book.
Thank you!" - Claire Tuasikal, Jakarta, Indonesia "..I have enjoyed participating in this course.
The programme is well structured and the information is clearly presented.
The materials are fun to use.
I had previously read "Reading Reflex", however having done this training course, I now feel much more confident when delivering instruction." - Anita Hunt, Fetcham, Surrey "..The Phono Graphix course has been a very effective way to learn about the Phono Graphix Program. I was able to successfully learn and implement the program." - Janette Haydell, Plaquemine, LA "..The On-line Interactive PG training course was a refresher for me. Originally I attended a week long course given by a trainer. It was wonderful to watch the animations and be able to replay them for clarification. This helped my understanding of why we do what we do. This experience helped me revisit and refine my teaching techniques, and remind me about things I might have forgotten. Demonstrations and explanations were clear, concise, and often entertaining. On top of everything else, it was fun!" - Judith Culang, Yardley, PA "..Thank You Carmen & Geoff for helping me to help my special students. Every time I battled with their reading demons, I knew there had to be a better method to teach reading than the one I was using. I had tried every conceivable way to teach reading to both special needs children and children in regular schools. In the past, I have used a combination of Phonics, Sight Reading and Whole Language approach with numerous reading schemes. However, something was always missing. But now, at long last, I have found the missing link in the form of PHONOGRAPHIX.
Doing this course online, allowed me plenty of time to practice and use what I was learning as I went along. As a result, I felt very confident that I was doing the right thing because I saw the results right before my eyes as I practiced with my students. Not only were my students improving in their reading, they were also beginning to make sense of their spellings. I would not hesitate to recommend this excellent course to any teacher who is serious about teaching reading both in a class setting and remedially. In my opinion, PHONOGRAPHIX is the answer to all parents and teachers prayers.
RADHIYA JUMA…….Special Needs Teacher From DUBAI, UAE
" - Radhiya Juma, Dubai, Dubai "..This course was information packed. The sections were extremely useful and covered all of the bases. A terrific investment!" - Rebekah deMarrais, Worcester, NY "..I have really enjoyed the course and have got a great deal out of it. I am looking forward to using the information and skills that I have gained with the children I work with.
Thankyou very much
Jackie" - jackie barlow, blackburn, lancashire "..I've just completed this fabulous course and very highly recommend teachers, speech and language professionals and parents to take it. I am a parent of three children. Two of which struggled tremendously breaking the code to reading particularly my 10 year old. We tried private tutors, and a myriad of programs until Phono Graphix was introduced by a speech and language therapist. It has been the only approach to reading that has helped our child.
Many thanks to Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness for creating this brillant and logical program that is accessible to professionals and parents.
Patti Nashman, MSW, RSW" - Patti Nashman, Toronto, Ontario "..Great to do it at my own pace. The research included justifies the teaching and is really interesting." - Ellen Barnes, Llanmartin, Newport "..I have found this to be a really informative method to learning how to teach phonographix to my class. This is the first online I have taken and I am pleased with the way in which I was instructed; it was easy to to follow and understand the lecture parts, convenient ability to watch many lessons being taught and I was able to ask questions at any point; Overall it was all done in a clear manner." - Kim Pollard, Brooklyn, NY "..After the completion of the Phono-Graphix Training Course, I fell like I have learned so much more about the nature of the code. I also feel more confident as a teacher." - Olawa Gibson, Brooklyn, NY "..Great training, I have a better understanding of teaching students with Dyslexia." - Meredith Nowotny, New Braunfels, TX "..This was very informative and the questions by other teachers/parents taking the course were very informative. It is a great program and I am utilizing all I learned in my classroom." - Jonathan Macon, Brooklyn, NY "..As a wife and mum, working as a teaching assistant, I enjoyed the online training course, because I didn't have to take time off work to do the course, I did most assignments with my students and I could work at home when time allowed me to." - Cirene Louise Martinson, Salwa, Kuwait "..I used Reading Reflex with my son for months, but the program has given me so much more than I expected. This method makes sense and our children NEED a reading program that isn't confusing. Since I homeschool my three boys it took me longer than I thought to get through the assignments, but that is the beauty of your course... being able to work at your own pace. My son is reading at grade level and I have a new career opportunity that will work with my schedule. Thanks Carmen and Geoff for offering this program!
" - Sara Lagerstedt, Duvall, WA "..This is an amazing course that can teach an educator how and when to proceed into the different levels of reading with a student. I teach at a school with students who have neuro-developmental disorders and these level have helped my students read as they control their behavior in class. I enjoyed each scenario and have made connections with my students behavior with those characters used in each level of reading. My favorite was Donny and seeing the patience the instructors had with this child as I have with my students. I recommend this course to any Language Arts teacher. Students today are in need of these levels of reading and require the different levels of breakdown in order to proceed into a successful reading. THANK YOU to everyone participating in this online training course. I admire your expertise!
Benita Villanueva" - Benita Villanueva, Houston, TX "..I am excited about using this tool to help the dyslexia program in our school." - Linda Gregory, Fort Worth, TX "..The Phono-Graphix program is a valuable aid in teaching children
to read." - Kathleen E. Miller, Ashburn, VA "..As a parent I have found this an intense but worthwhile course. It gave me a much better understanding of how to teach and apply Phono-Graphix methods. Learning online was a different and sometimes difficult experience. But most importantly we are delighted to have discovered a method that works well." - Tracey Lennon, Melbourne, Victoria "..This program and course are very useful. It teaches parents, teachers and students the easiest way to learn to read and spell the most difficult language (English). I highly recommend it." - Christine Bastidas, Nogales, AZ "..AWESOME!!!! AN ABSOLUTE MUST!!!!! IT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT TEACHING READING AND WRITING FOREVER!!! COMPLETELY FRESH AND OUT OF THE ORDINARY!!!!" - Barbara Hernandez, Nogales, AZ "..The Phono-Graphix online course was a great way to learn how to teach this method. I really liked being about to replay some parts, sometimes it helped me to see the same lesson performed more than once. I think that I got a lot more out of this course by taking my time (it took about four weeks) than if I tried to learn it all during one week. I would also like to attend a face to face course as a update or refresher course, maybe next summer.
Molly Cruice" - Molly Cruice, Nogales, AZ "..I have enjoyed the Phono-Graphix training. I have learned so much that I am excited to try with all my new students." - Becky Schrimpf, Nogales, AZ "..I am a literacy coach in a district that adopted the Phono-Graphix method in our K-2 classrooms as well as an intervention for older students who are struggling with reading. The program was beneficial in helping me understand the program more clearly and it gave me many insights to help teachers. I appreciate the opportunity to take the course and learn this method." - Meredith Browand, Brownsburg, IN "..Phono-Graphix makes learning to read step by step for parents and easy to do for kids." - Sandy Shipman, Gig Harbor, WA "..I'm glad I took the on line course as opposed to the intensive week one, because I found it really useful to be able to replay a section if I needed clarification. I was relieved to find the yellow section didn't have any written assignments - I found it quite difficult to include all the details as per the assignment specifications. Although enjoying all the tasks, I found it arduous when writing about them - however, once written I could appreciate how this helped me focus on getting the detail right. One thing I discovered which might help others whose students find it hard to hear the chunks in the yellow section, is to get them to sing the words - this helps them find the natural breaks.
" - Clare Ward, Bristol, Avon "..It is a really effective tool for children (esp. at an early age). I was held back a grade because I had trouble reading and I was in the phonics program. I wish I had something like this because it is an amazing program that will be beneficial for all children." - Gail Navarro, Chino Hills, CA "..The Phono-Graphix Training Course provides an accessible, entertaining and educational forum in which to learn the art of teaching others to read. It has undoubtedly given me the confidence and the know-how to teach others how to read. I look forward to sharing the knowledge I have gained with the children who come under my care." - Grant Douglas, Tonbridge, Kent "..I think the course content is excellent in that it teaches you how to teach reading with a system that works.
I was thrilled with realizing that the way I learnt English ( as my third language) was what this course is suggesting. Looking forward to using it with my students.
" - Åsa Berg, Atlin, British Columbia "..Loved the course. Phono-Graphix just makes sense! Phono-Graphix teaches the nature of the code and all the specific skills needed to be a good reader in a very structure program. Excellent program. The best I have seen!" - Charlotte Ryan, Tulsa , OK "..I found this course useful. It helped me to understand the components of the Phono-Graphix program and the nature of the code. I was able to assist teachers with proper testing and student placement as well as lesson planning. I feel that the estimated 35 hours is a bit shorter then reality. It took me several weeks to complete the course and the work, also the lessons are geared towards a clinical setting which made translating the lessons into a classroom of 40 a bit difficult. The assignments are well designed and helped me to get a good sense of how this program works. The on-line lessons were convenient and the articles were useful. I feel like I have a clear understanding of the principals of Phono-Graphix and am able to assist teachers implement the program in their classrooms." - Julie Bartlett, Long Beach, CA "..I have been working with Phono-graphix now for about six months and have found it to be a valuable resource in teaching children how to read. Completing the on-line course gave me a depth of understanding I would not have had and makes the instruction for my students more powerful. I highly recommend it." - Sally Gallagher, Gig Harbor, WA "..This is a good training class. I felt the direction were clear and the best part is the program itself...a wonderful way to teach all students to read." - margaret learned, south orange, NJ "..Very Interesting and useful." - Brendan Ward, London, London "..The Online Interactive Phono-Graphix Training Course has been very informative, practical and provided support. I have found it beneficial to do this course over a period of time as opposed to trying to cram a great deal of information into a very short time frame for eg. in the form of a one week course. Having to write about what actually happened during sessions provides you with an opportunity to reflect on your method and responses received. I highly recommend this course to anyone considering to become a certified Phono-Graphix Therapist. You can complete it in the comfort of your own home at times convenient to yourself and of course it is more affordable this way which is even more of a bonus." - Tahirih Bazyar, Kenmore, Queensland "..I really enjoyed this course. I have seen great improvements with students that I tutor. The
students even enjoy it !
Thank-you Carmen and Goeff, you have created a wonderful program.
Sincerely,
Daniele Daddario" - Daniele Daddario, osprey, FL "..I have thoroughly enjoyed taking this course. It makes so much sense and I have seen the dramatic progress my Chinese Ayi has made in the decoding of text. It was even an advantage that she did not know the meaning of most of the words as it meant that I was able to concentrate on the decoding. How well she could problem solve herself became clear in the multi-syllable word section. She drew on prior knowledge and used most of those strategies to have a go and decide which decoding sounded or looked right to her. I was amazed that she usually made the correct choice as I thought that her lack of familiarity with English would be a barrier to the success of this.
I wish that I had done this course much earlier when I was full time teaching as I can recall many children that would have benefitted from this approach. I did my best at the time but this would have made a greater difference. I am now planning to use this approach with the EAL students that I teach at an international school 2 days per week and take on private students.
You are never too old to learn and this course is worth the effort." - Anne Ross, Shanghai, Shanghai "..Phono-Graphix is a unique experience. As far as I am concerned, it should be considerded as the benchmark for reading instruction." - Connie Usher, Langhorne, PA "..I very much enjoyed working through the Phono-Graphix course. I feel that I have not only developed many new strategies for teaching reading, but I also now have a well organised (and researched) format in which to deliver lessons to the children that I will work with in the future." - Nadia Ollington, Hobart, Tasmania "..This course is well set up do to on your own. Instructions along with the examples are easy to understand. It was great to be able to work on it at my own pace." - Gail Baker, North Vancouver, B.C. "..This was a step-by-step, in-depth study of Phono-Graphix that I can do in the comfort of my own home, and at a pace that meets my needs as a parent, educator, and business owner. Kudos, McGuinnesses!!" - Adrielle Selke, Waco, TX "..I felt the course was very well laid out and the explainations of each step were easy to follow." - Leah Snelgrove, North Vancouver, British Columbia/Canada "..The on-line course was convienient and great for busy professional. The simplicity of instruction and the usefulness of the methods endorsed will be a great aset to both the teacher and the learner.
Go for it!" - Joanne Drew, North Vancouver, British Columbia "..I would highly recommend this course to anyone working with children in the school system or tutoring privately. I have been doing both for the past fifteen years. After studying one section of the course I would use it with the children that I am currently working with. It was great for them and myself. I feel that I will be able to use this method of teaching for many years to come for my tutoring business. Thank you. Gail Stein." - Gail Stein, North Vancouver, British Columbia "..The course was great! It allowed me to work at my own pace. I could try the assignments with a child and report how it went. This enabled me to actually think about the best parts and more difficult parts of the lessons for each child. This was a great refresher course. It had been a while since I actually taught Phono-Graphix lessons and I needed the update on teaching skills." - Sharon Otremba, Eustis, FL "..Great class!" - Jennifer Miller, potomac, MD "..I really enjoyed this course and thought it is very well put together and very easy to follow. I already had some training in Phono-graphix so I had some basics, but when I showed parts of the course to my family to explain to them what I was studying they caught on very quickly. So for anyone who is taking this course whether they know anything about Phono-graphix or not they will be able to catch on very quickly and begin to teach it to others. Thank you so much for this program. It has helped my son in a huge way and all the 4 & 5 years that I taught last term were reading by the end of the school year. It was amazing to watch their progression and growth. The best was when they read their first book by themselves little own their first word. Thanks again, Inga Ward" - Inga Ward, New Braunfels, TX "..This course is nothing short of amazing. It keeps you on your toes in a fun, learning-oriented manner while letting you work at your on pace. The interactive work, was so neat and tells it exactly how it is with your students." - Diana Dibble, Westbury, NY "..I think this program will be very beneficial to our remedial and beginning readers." - Jenna McCoy, hunters, WA "..A very good course with excellent practise and support." - michelle scorziello, Purley, Surrey "..Every time I sat to listen and practice I loved the program even more. Every time I worked with children I saw their smiles and proudness as they began to read ad understand the process of reading. I can only hope that school systems see the value of this unique and wholesome approach so that we can prevent reading disabilities and focus on good teaching how to read theory, techniques, and practices." - Annabella Klockner, Miami, FL "..I found all the information to be a bit overwhelming at the beginning of the course, but as I continued it all began to make sense and come together. I have seen the benefits with using this approach with children with whom I've worked and I'm excited to use it in the future! I wish I had learned to read this way." - Julie Maru, Houston, TX "..The coure was wonderful and support was easy to attain throughout. My students have benefited from my training in this area." - Alison Coker, Houston, TX ".. I have been very motivated by the course and given the tools to feel that I can help and make a difference to children who are still finding reading and spelling difficult. It has given me the confidence to know where to start unravelling children's difficulties and also the ability to help the staff and parents work with their children. The children have enjoyed their lessons and gained confidence too." - Julie Piper, Eynsford, Dartford, Kent "..I really enjoyed this course It will help me in my work." - Renu Chahil, North Vancouver, British Columbia "..Took this as a 'refresher' after 6 years of teaching Phono-Graphix in a school setting. Really made me evaulate my teaching, refine a lot of my techniques and inspired me to invent some new games and resources. Thoroughly recommended and thoroughly enjoyable." - Ann Sullivan, Manchester , Greater Manchester "..This course was very clear, interactive, and easy to understand. At times it was a bit difficult to have access to a group of students, but the practice of applying the technique in real setting is very crucial to understanding the dynamics of Phono Graphix." - Natashia Nunez, Ontario, CA "..I have taking this course has really helped my class to make progress in their Literacy. Their reading has generally improved greatly and they are beginning to use their knowledge of sounds in their writing. Even those children who have Special Educational Needs have made some progress and have more knowledge of letter sounds than would have normally been expected at the end of Year 1 (Age 6)." - Susan Shram, Welling, Kent "..Extremely worthwhile. As you go through the work you know instantly that particular strategies are going to help children who you know of, who are struggling to get to grips with certain aspects of reading and spelling. Phono- Graphix gives them a rationale to use which is simple and straight forward, and it is really gratifying to see children finally succeed.
As you would expect with something worthwhile, it was hard work, but very well worth it, because the skills it taught will make such a difference." - Olivia Venables, LLandrindod Wells, Powys "..Phonographix really gives you a concrete way to teach word attack strategies." - Bonnie Overpeck, New Braunfels, TX "..Although I have been teaching for over ten years it was only when I completed this course that I finally believed that I could actually teach a child how to read. I learnt a lot from doing the assignments - sometimes the lesson was one that I only did because it was necessary for the course. I am glad I did because after doing the lesson I could see its value. A fantastic course - I am looking forward to using what I have learnt with my students." - Nicole Barton, Gympie, Queensland ".. This course will keep you involved with your learning, as well as, the student's learning! I especially enjoyed the short tutoring sessions that were presented." - Ginger Effenberger, New Braunfels, TX "..This course is REALLY easy and interesting and provides complete coverage of the methods-with room for discovery! It is also fun. It can be done while working with various age children. I did while working as a cover teacher. Perfect!
Jill Robinson" - Jill Robinson, solihull, west Midlands "..This was a wonderful course to take. It helped my struggling readers to actually find success!" - Patricia McEvoy, Deer Park, NY "..If you are thinking of taking the course I would recommend it. Phono Graphix is a great teaching strategy that will help your students become stronger readers and spellers. I will
continue to use the program and sign up for any new courses.
Thank you," - Maryann Merrill, Patchogue, NY "..I found that phonographix was a great course to become certified in. I am in the process of doing my winter literacy assessments and have noticed a huge difference in the abilities of my students. Almost all of my students are at or above grade level. I believe that phonographix has given them amazing skills that they use through out the day, not just in reading and writing. Because I have a small class, only 15 students, I was able to break into 2 small word work groups 3 times a week, with the help of my assistant. I was difficult on the days when my assistant was out of the room, because I had different levels of abilities at the time. I found it difficult to visit other classrooms in the upper grades to do the higher code levels(I'm a K teacher). Trying to arrange for meeting times, extended the time it took me to complete my training. I would reccomend Phonographix for any grade level that has a class with small numbers. Small groups of no more than 8, I found did wonders." - Maureen Becker, new york, NY "..Comments
Phonographix can teach even the most resistant learner to read and spell. This program teaches the student to look at the English language as a code. With Phonographix skills, anyone will be able to break the code. In learning to teach Phonographix, I was able to look at the written word in a while new way. After I became accustomed to the terminology (I needed to put aside what I already knew) I found that the methods and procedures followed a logical order and created a method of teching that is aso simple that it can be used with a beginner reader as well as a remedial reader. I can’t wiat to teach this program and watch a non-reader blossom into a confident learner.
Jill Levigion" - Jill Levigion, Washington, NJ "..The course was very inspiring on how to teach kids of all ages how to read. The instructors introduced to me a new informative approach on teaching reading and how to correct errors the proper way." - Lonnie Gingrich, Prewitt, NM "..This course was very beneficial to me. I learned how to assess my students and teach to their individual needs. Even though I teach third grade, many of my students enter my classroom needing basic phonics instructions. Phonographics is a great phonics program that helped my students learn to read. I learned how to "fill in the gaps", so to speak." - Lynda Spencer, Prewitt, NM "..A very thorough training that allowed me to utilize what I was learning and apply it as I was continuing on." - Noreen Castro, New Braunfels, TX "..I feel so fortunate to have the interactive world of knowledge at my fingertips. Taking the Phono-Graphix course online was the only way I could have taken the course; I could not squeeze travel and time away into my schedule.
At first I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to have a self indulgent getaway at the Scotts Valley Training Center in Northern California. Somewhere between putting the Phono-Graphix kit together and starting the first lesson, my disappointment was replaced with excitement. The Training Manuals were straightforward and organized for teaching individuals, small groups, full classrooms, as well as clinic and resource reading groups. The course was well thought out. It anticipates questions and addresses them by giving examples with concrete solutions. There are articles posted to keep you informed on whats going on in the Literacy world. When questions arise, Carmen and Geoffery McGuinness are right there. They don’t seem to mind that it’s 11:45pm or that you have your pajamas on and your sipping your last cup of camomile tea for the night.
" - Thana Dicus, Woodlnd Hills, CA "..I strongly encourage all educators to take this course. You will definetly gain and achieve in using Phono-Graphix materials." - Lenora Francisco, Prewitt, NM "..I feel that this is a very effective program for students that are bilingual. As I went along the course I got more impressed by the program, because my student started to improve like he never did.
Keep up the good work." - Rose Largo, Prewitt, NM "..I recommend that other teachers and parents take this course, The Online Interactive Phono-Graphix Training Course. You will learn about all the ups and downs of reading words and text. You are probably wondering why some students are not getting it! This training will open the doors for you. Please take the course, so you can help all students learn the initial way of READING.
Thanks, Lucia" - Lucia Loretto, Prewitt, NM "..I would not have understand Phono-Graphix as well as I do, even if I read all of the PG books by myself. Now I know where to start, what to teach, and how to correct. Reporting about the PG lessons with real children was not easy, but I learned a lot. I enjoyed seeing Carmen and Geoffrey, too." - Yoshiko Nakano, Shiroi, Chiba "..Phono-Graphix is very enlightening. It provides me with the explicit knowledge about reading and spelling words necessary to teach my second grade students. I look forward to continuing to teach using this method with my second graders.
" - Tammy Sweger, Prewitt, NM "..I really injoyed learning how to work with children with decoding sound picture adn alot more which will help educate the stidents. thank you" - Ella Tolth, Prewitt, NM "..I enjoyed the course very much. This is a great method for teaching children how to read. The children were actually excited about doing more Phono-Graphix. Thanks so much." - Angela Layfield, Seguin, TX "..Welcome,
Taking this course has taught me to teach students the right way to code. This was a wonderful experience. I had a lot of fun doing the activities with my students. I encourage you to take this course. No regrets here. Good-Luck.
Ms. Emerson" - Verna Emerson, Prewitt, NM "..The course is very helpful. I will be using the materials with my students in the classroom. The materials are well organized to follow up with the assignments that go with each lesson to follow. I like the material that are based on sound picture that way the students get the idea of basic sound picture to help them understand the lesson." - Lucille Antonio, Prewitt, NM "..I found the course really interesting. It is great to do online as it makes it really flexible." - Alice Milner, Amersham, AL "..I have found this online course very interesting. I knew a little about the philosophy of Phonographix and this has confirmed my belief that this is the best way of teaching children to read and spell. The way in which the course has been structured has enabled me to 'dip' in and out when time has allowed. The activities have developed my understanding and I liked the use of cartoon characters to develop various techniques - it is also useful when you are put in that position. In summary, I have enjoyed following this course and would heartily recommend it to other people." - Joanne Holmes, Manchester, Lancashire "..As a literacy intervention teacher working with struggling readers, the Phonographix course has given me a valuable program to use with my students. It gives me tools to implement instruction at the very beginning level of reading. The aspect of "learning the code" of the language helps students with unlocking the mystery of learning to read. The flexibility of the on-line course enabled me to complete the program working with my own schedule." - Gabriele Walz, Kelowna, British Columbia Canada "..Wow! What a brilliant course. Very comprehensive with a good mix of theory and practise. I feel that I have finally been taught how to teach reading and spelling. As you progress through the course you will just know that this is THE method you have been searching for.
My advice - go for it - you won't regret it!
PS. Thank you Carmen & Geoff" - Tina Bishop, Bean, Kent "..I sure did learn a lot from this training. I find that what you're teaching about reading well work if it is done corrently. That is important for our students." - Tonita Chee, Prewitt, NM "..This has been the most intensive on-line training course that I have ever taken." - Patricia Keathley, Prewitt, NM "..I have truly enjoyed this online training because it taught me a whole lot of things that I didn't know how to help someone to read. Now I can help kids how to read using the strategies and error corrections that I was taught. This is good knowledge for anyone that works with kids or have kids to use. I have worked with some highschool kids that didn't know how to read and I wish I had this training when I was working with them. Now I just wonder where they are and what they are up to." - Sandra Lewis, Prewitt, NM "..Phono-Graphix provides a phonemic awareness approach to the teaching of reading and spelling which fits with the logic of the young child. A traditional phonics curriculum is filled with If-Then logic and can not be understood by the young learner. Reading researchers have determined that phonemic awareness, sound-symbol code knowledge, and an early start are the three strongest determinants of reading sucess. ("The Clinical Connection", Vol.11, Number 4, p. 2) Phono-Graphix does it all and the course information is essential for all reading teachers. Working online for the training helps to accomodate individual schedules and allows the course participants to set the pace of the class so the learning is maximized." - Annette Struck, Fergus Falls, MN "..I have really enjoyed this course. As a speech language pathologist I could apply what I know as a therapist to the instructions given. As I've read lots of dyslexia research, I find that it all supports Phono-Graphix." - Kathleen Rose-Le, Holiday, FL "..I thought that this was an excellent Training Course. I was challenged to learn with out feeling frustrated. I felt that any question that I had would be answered right away.
Excellent!" - Lorraine Perez, Denver, CO "..I am really excited about the program. This program makes more sense to me in teaching reading than anything I had ever used. I had alreadyt been doing some of the ideas already because it made sense to me. This course put it all together for me. I can't wait for school to start. I will be working with Kinder, 1st and 2nd graders who are struggling readers. I know this will help. Thank you.
Katherine Norwood" - Katherine Norwood, Jourdanton, TX "..The class is very informative if you have never taught reading or phonics before. It helped me understand some of the errors my students were making and why they were making these errors. Also, I know how to correct these errors now." - Kim Fogle, Prewitt, NM "..A great program to help the struggling reader." - Debbie McKinley, Mtn. Grove, MO "..The course was very interesting. I learned a variety of new and interesting lessons for my students. I found that phono-graphix helped my lower group stay on task and they kept focused on the lesson. I use phono-graphix in my classroom on a regular basis especially for my struggling students and students who were retained the previous year due to reading.
" - Janice Simpson, Prewitt, NM "..The online Interactive training was very flexible compared to a training session or course. I was able to work at my own pace with the online course and was not rushed to finish assignments. I also had time to practice the activities at my convenience.
The new things I learned was a little different from the way I taught reading. The segmenting, phoneme manipulation and code knowledge lessons are very basic skills that I have sometimes failed to follow sequentially which would definitely confuse some children.
The course will be another way I can teach the students who are still struggling to read at 4th to 6th grades.
" - Marjorie Newman, Prewitt, NM "..When I first started this course I thought reading was taught by teaching sounds for each letter first and them putting them together. After taking this course I learned how to teach children to read with sounds rather than all the rules. I like that this program offers each child lessons at the ability and does not hold them back waiting to master rules." - Samantha Ulibarri, Prewitt, NM "..In discussions with several university professors, I was appalled, as they were, at how many of their incoming students were functionally illiterate. I made it a point to volunteer in the first and fourth grade classes of two of my grandchildren, and although the classes were small, it was obvious that the children could not receive all the individual attention they needed. When I decided to become an English tutor, I looked around for appropriate material. The first grade teacher loaned me her copy of Reading Reflex and I knew I had found my method. A devout reader all my life, I went through a severe head trauma and for several years had great difficulty interpreting the written word. It was all mental cacophony. As I recall how I struggled to regain this wonderous gift, I wish I had had someone use these techniques with me. Now, I suppose, I am a crusader for literacy, and as I start a new career at almost 60, I look forward to being able to help children and adults develop their love for literature and the written word. Whether Harry Potter or Shakespeare, the sports page of the daily paper or a technical manual on making the space shuttle safer, reading is essential, and Phono-Graphix, to me, is the most logical way to teach it.
Nan Kenton, M.A., M.C." - Nan Kenton, Port Angeles, WA "..I took this class with an instructor 4 years ago and have been using this method to help struggling readers in the public school system in NW New Mexico, USA ever since. The program works. I am not a computer whiz, so I think while this on line course has served to remind me of things I had forgotten I would still prefer the interaction of a live instructor." - M. Mark Head, Prewitt, NM "..Overall, I would say the course is very well-organized with enough variation to keep it interesting. I also enjoyed the obvious and subtle uses of humor to keep it light in the midst of what can be an intense subject." - Rob Soley, Mount Rainier, MD "..Comes with a great set of materials." - Margaret Kadlec, Downers Grove, IL "..I enjoyed taking the on-line phonographix training class. It was great to be able to work on it after school and when my children were in bed. I liked the convience of the course and the on-line support was good. I recommend anyone who teaches reading to take this class." - julie callahan, Charlotte, NC "..Phono Graphix is easy to understand and implement. This course has been a great resource for me as a teacher to use in the classroom and in resource work. The best part about it is that it works!" - Jennifer Kelly, Fredericton, New Brunswick "..Previous to taking the course I had bought and read Reading Reflex and Verbal Intelligence. However, taking the course and reporting back on work I did helped "cement" the correct practices for reading instruction. I have a son who was struggled with reading last year in first grade. While he still needs practice reading, he has made tremendous progress in reading - beyond what his school teacher thought he could do. I attribute his success to my fortunate finding of this program. I have another son in kindergarten who does not have any learning struggles that my now 2nd grade son exhibited. He is reading "long vowels" quite easily as a result of learning to read with this program. I am convinced that Phono-Graphix is most definitely a superior method for teaching reading. For those with no learning issues, this program helps reading comes very quickly and it makes a lot of sense. For those who struggle with reading, this program makes it possible. I have also worked with two other girls in a one-on-one setting who have really struggled with reading. The progress they have made and the confidence they feel when they "break the code" is wonderful. I would not teach reading any other way. Katherine Niemann" - Katherine Niemann, Fairfax, VA ".. I'm glad I took the course. The phono graphix method is,without a doubt, the best method currently known to teach a child to read. The course was simple, everything was plainly explained.I feel much more able now to teach phono graphix to a child after having taken this course." - Carlos Bello, Hialeah, FL "..I have found the Phono-Graphix course very simulating. It has introduced new ideas for dealing with specific of reading and spelling difficulties in a structured intelligent approach. The children that I have been working with throughout this course seem to have enjoyed the activities of each level and I am looking forward to taking a student completely through the scheme. It will be very interesting to watch the child develop and hopefully improve through the 12 week programme." - Mair Chivers, Lawrence Weston, Bristol, UK "..The Phono-Graphix Course is well worth your time.
I had seen p.g. in action from a teacher in our building and was impressed. Each year her students amazed me and talk soon got around. I picked up what I could from her to support her teaching style (I am a title-1)but felt like I would benefit from taking the course myself.
I am in kindergarten and we have all levels here from no knowledge of letter sounds to reading second grade materials. Taking p.g. has empowered me to approach any student and I definetly feel more confident in my teaching abilities.
Garnet" - Garnet Malatesta, Mountian Home, AZ "..I REALLY ENJOYED THE COURSE ON LINE. I BELIEVE THAT THE MANUALS EXACT WORDING IN REFERRING TO THE BOOK WAS A BIT CONFUSING. FOR EXAMPLE: WHEN ASKED TO DO THE LESSON ON PINK WORD READING, MY BOOK HAS: PINK WORD CONSTRUCTION. I WOULD HAVE LIKED THE WORDING FROM THE COMPUTER TO BE MORE ON TASK IN THE PAPER IN THE MANUAL LESSON HEADINGS.
I REALLY ENJOYED THE VARIATIONS OF LESSON, READING, QUIZ ETC... THE GRAPHICS WERE VERY FUN TO WATCH! I ESPECIALLY LIKED BEING ABLE TO CONTACT YOU ALL WITH OUR QUESTIONS. ALL IN ALL A WONDERFUL TRAINING COURSE! I WOULD RECOMMEND IT. KIMBERLY HIGGINS" - Kimberly Higgins, Louisville, KY "..This course teaches English in a systematic and structured way. The beauty of the course lies in its theoretical underpinnings. In order to appreciate this course you have to understand its logic. There are three things to constantly keep in mind - the knowledge about the nature of the code AND the skills required to use this code in reading. Thirdly, learning here requires full participation from the learner through 'learning by doing'. Hence the importance of error and error correction.
For learning to occur, it has to be meaningful to the student and this course uses sounds of real words as the basis of instruction. A student is taught to segment and then blend in order to read using real words.
You will need to do the assignments in order to appreciate how important error corrections are in teaching reading.
I have learnt a lot through this course.
" - LEE LAY WAH, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang "..I really wish that I had ben shown this course as I was growing up. I am sure my spelling and reading would have been greatly improved. I value this course highly and I continue to use it to not only help the kindergarteners I work with, but also my own errors. Thank you is such a small word" - DeLynn Young, Mtn. Home, AR "..The course really served to drive home everything provided in the Reading Reflex book and provided great practice to ensure that my work with students is spot on. Highly recommended!" - Kathy Palomino, Tampa, FL "..I teach remedial reading, and this approach to teaching phonics has helped my students gain self-confidence in their reading. I really like the scratch sheet spelling. At first my students did not want to spell the words with each sound, but then they discovered how writing the words with each sound helped them remember the correct way to spell." - Margaret Mulbery, Mountain Grove, MO "..I was very impressed with the detailed content. Details and steps to follow were very explicit. It also explained how to correct a child who made specific mistakes.
Doing it on-line, has avoided me in having to have time off and therefore the school did not have to get supply cover.
This helps with school funding.
Perhaps teachers in Wales can take advantage of the General Teaching Council for Wales CPD Bursary grant of £500 to do the course.
I have in addition to doing this on line course, been using Reading Reflex with a group of children in my SEN Support Class, who have reading and spellig difficulties.
The structured format of the Program has enabled me to follow it rigidly, thus all the pupils have covered the same work--We have done the Basic Code., and Adjacent Consonants to date.
Congratulations to Read America for this innovative One Line training." - Michael Davies, Cardigan , Ceredigion, Wales "..I have found the Phono-Graphix training very useful. I plan to use it daily with my students. I like how each section is broken down into explicit directions and error corrections are also provided. I also like how there are so many different resources provided with this training. It is user friendly as well as parent friendly (if parents decide they are going to help at home). Instead of just jumping from one section to another each step builds on the next which I find very useful. I have experimented w/several students at differing levels during the training. It is exciting to see the improvements they have made over the course of this training. I look forward to seeing the smiles on their faces when another concept is understood. Thank you for allowing me to participate in this course!" - Stephanie Anderson, Mountain Grove, MO "..This has been a really useful course, I have really enjoyed working through it. I found most of my questions had been anticipated already and were answered by the lessons as we went along. I have seen great progress with my test students and am looking forward to working with more children.
Many thanks for your excellent work." - Anne Wass, Thames, Coromandel "..I have enjoyed learning through the PG training course. There are many challenges along the way, just as there are for the students we work with. Also, just like those students, we have to build our own abilities through constant revision, repetition and further training. I am truly looking forward to my work as a certified PG therapist." - Victoria Warner, Peachland, British Columbia "..The Phono-Graphix Training course was a really positive experience. The method follows a very logical course and is easy to follow. I liked the flexibility of the course enabling me to complete sections in my own time without any pressure from assignement deadlines. The technical support was excellent, thank you Gayle Hayes for always answering my e-mails so quickly and being so patient with me." - Robyn Monime, chene-bougeries, Geneva "..I am excited to use Phono-Graphix with my students. They will benefit from the knowledge I have gained through participation in the course." - Jeanette Dethrow, Mtn. Grove, MO "..I have enjoyed learning the Phono-Graphix method of teaching. I especially like the sound pictures and the way they are used to teach reading. Having worked with students as I took the course has allowed me to apply what I've learned and see the progress the students make using Phono-Graphix. I will use the knowledge the rest of my teaching career." - Wanda Moritz, Mtn. Grove, MO "..I found Phono-Graphix to be very beneficial for my struggling readers. This course helped students to make sense of what was an otherwise very confusing phonics program that our school previously had in place. I have worked with this program during the past school year and was fortunate enough to watch my struggling readers become very successful readers. As a teacher, nothing is more rewarding." - Laura Brawley, Mtn. Grove, MO "..This course enabled me to have the visual support I need to implement the Phono Graphix program as well as a text to clear up any misconceptions I may have had. It was flexible as well and met the time demands of my family and job. I appreciated being able to observe a lesson and then be able to get with my students and feel confident that I knew exactly what I was doing." - Kristy Wakefield, Mtn. Grove, MO "..Well worth the time and effort in taking the Phono-Graphix course. It will be helpful with my students who are below level." - Pat Rogers, Mtn. Grove, MO "..The Phono-Graphix Training Course was very informative. I have a class of 29 students ranging in age from 5 to 13. All the children I teach have a variety of learning difficulties and styles. This program has given me another tool to put in my "bag of tricks". I am confident that Phono-Graphix will be a very supportive program to use with high incidence children." - Julie Gushue, North Vancouver, British Columbia "..Enjoyed pacing myself through the reading process offered on-line. It took the pressure off of hurrying through lessons because of a time constraint.
At times I had difficulty finding students at certain levels as I tutor just a few students independently. So I took my time and waited till the opportunity presented itself to tackle those lessons.
Students enjoyed using the white board and pull down letters in making words. More active participation and kept them on task." - Susan OLeary, Scottsdale, AZ "..This has made a world of difference for the students at my school. I have older students using this to tutor younger children. It is amazing to see both gain so much knowledge from each other." - Kathy DeLeon, Thackerville, OK "..It has been a very stimulating to course to take. It was marvellous to be able to work on-line just when I had a few minutes or sometimes for a little longer. It is very important to practise with children. It was fascinating to see the children learning so rapidly. Sometimes it takes a successful experience like working with the children to help get rid of the old ideas we have about teaching reading and go for the new techniques.
I found the cutting up of all the materials to be rather time consuming and frustrating when I was so busy. It really takes several hours and for the cost of the course, I think the materials should come ready to use so that we can focus on the learning.
New Zealand children found the stories to be rather stilted and dull as they are so used to the highly stimulating literature that accompanies the whole languge approach we use in schools here. But I think they would rapidly progress beyond the stories provided and really it is just a stepping stone to other literature." - Jan Martin, Blenheim, Marlborough "..I had always been an advocate of the phonics approach. The phono-graphix approach maintains the critical importance of sound-symbol correspondence, while dispensing with the countless phonics rules and exceptions which are so confusing to many children. The phono-graphix course has really helped clarify for me the concepts of overlap and variation in the code, and how to present these concepts clearly and in the best sequence of instruction. Although I was aware of these concepts and their importance before, I had never had such a clear idea of how and when to present them to the student. I would recommend this course for anyone in a position to teach or assist children in their reading. The course has been very, very helpful to me." - Anne Hurst, Redlands, CA "..The on-line course is a good option for someone such as myself who prefers to do the program at my own pace. I have worked on it over time and I look forward to completing the exam and beginning to use the program "professionally" at my reading clinic." - Ann Green, west hartford, CT "..I have really enjoyed taking this course. It was very convenient for me to be able to work at my own pace and to be able to go back and review the materials as many times as I needed. The videos of actual clinical lessons was extremely helpful!! I was hesitant about taking an online course, but this has been a very pleasant experience." - Shelby Cascio, Kansas City, MO "..This course gave me many new and fresh ideas of teaching phonics. I particularly liked the way in which the course works in stages but which can be combined and made to work for you and the particular group of children. I am looking forward to teaching this course to a new set of children from the beginning of the academic year where we can all learn together." - Ann Somerville, Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire "..I am really glad that I took the course. I have been teaching elementary special ed. and have used it in class. Next year I will be teaching 3rd and I want to use it there as well. Anita" - Anita Collins, Dora , MO "..The online format is great. I'd recommend this course to anyone involved in teaching reading. It makes a lot more sense than traditional phonics instruction.
Deborah Walker, M.Ed.
North Haverhill, NH" - Deborah Walker, North Haverhill, NH "..I really enjoyed the course and I'm sure it will help me in my classroom this year!
" - Elizabeth Everett, New Braunfels, TX "..This has been a wonderful course.
It really helped me understand all the elements required in good readers. I often had students who were good readers but poor spellers. Now I better understand why this is so. I also have learned to diagnose the real problem areas for my students. This program is easy to follow and very effective.
Thanks" - Carri Mercer, New Braunfels, TX "..I must say this program has worked wonders for two students in seventh grade and virtually non-readers. They are both testing out on a third grade reading level. Thank you for this valuable course." - catherine holcombe, Ringoes, NJ "..Taking the course on-line gave me an opportunity between sections to use what I had learned with my students. This enhanced my understanding of the material.
I have enjoyed the course and am excited about the results that I have seen so far. Thank you." - Lorraine Kennedy, Riverview, New Brunswick "..This has been a really worthwhile couse and has been stimulating and thought provoking. It was presented ina really inspiring way and the lessons were a great help. I hope I have been successful as I think it is a superb way of teaching reading and spelling." - Fay Wright, Liverpool, Other "..This course was so valuable to me. I highly recommend this course be taken by anyone working with beginning readers. I think it is essential to view the materials over and over again." - Cecilia Gomez, New Braunfels, TX "..Dear Carmen and Geoffrey:
I am very pleased to have chosend to take this course over the summer. I believe it is going to be very useful in my private practice.
I think it is very organized, clear and dydactic as well as the material.
Having the opportunity to do hands-on activities with the kids is very important, since I have been able to see results in a very short time, and kids enjoy working with the activities.
Thank you very much and we'll keep in touch.
Clemencia" - Clemencia Ayerbe de Méndez, Bogotá, Other "..I really enjoyed the coarse and found it quite challenging. I liked the interactive way the materials were presented and the large amount of materials provided to help reinforce what we were learning. At first I had no idea what I was doing, but the more I learned and the more I worked with the children, the easier it became to understand the whole process. It seems very overwhelming at first and you think that you will never remember what to do, but there is so much repetion and hands-on activities, that before you know it, you're a pro!" - Diane Blake, Germantown, MD "..I enjoyed the variety in the course – some reading, watching videos, some written assignments and some hands on use of the materials. As I progressed through the course, and with more and more use of the kit and other materials, I understood so much more clearly. To anyone who is new to the course, remember the site is on a timer. I found myself typing up assignments two or three times before I could get them to submit. I discovered typing them in MS Word and copying and pasting was the way to go! In conclusion, I learned a lot, enjoyed the course and it really wasn’t too much work. I look forward to using what I have learned with my students in school in September!" - Wendy Squire, North Vancouver, British Columbia "..I have really enjoyed taking the course. I was apprehensive about taking a course on line but actually liked being able to work at my own pace and not waste time traveling to a course site.
I feel much better prepared to work with children after taking the course. It really came together for me during the purple assignments.
I am so excited to have such valuable tools available and love helping kids learn to read." - Rori Becker, Apopka, FL "..The PG online course was thorough and easy to use. I especially appreciated the convenience of progressing at my own pace and being able to work on the coursework any time, day or night, as my schedule allowed. All questions I submitted were answered within 24 hours. I am excited to implement PG this fall with at-risk primary students in my school and also in my private practice. I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone interested in expediting their literacy instruction." - Bette Boote, Hull, IA "..It was GREAT! Much more interesting than any course at college. I loved the videos where we actually saw someone from the clinic teach a real child.
I learned so much. The articles we had to read were very interesting and full of great tips and information.
My questions were answered very quickly and I really appreciated that.
The program makes a lot of sense and teaches you the logic behind language and reading. It makes teaching reading so much easier. I can´t wait to try it out with my first graders next year. I´m sure they´ll learn to read much faster.
" - Elisa Chamorro, Miami, FL "..I think that the online interactive Phono-Graphix course was a good way for me to receive the traing I need to use the program. By the course being online it allowed me to complete the course on my own time table." - Jo Beth Miller-Dotson, Dora , MO "..Excellent…………….. I had read the book and have frequently incorporated many of the principles into my therapy sessions prior to taking the class. However, I still found the course extremely advantageous. I am thrilled to add this knowledge to my clinical tool box. My students and I thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" - Stephanie Swartz, Leesburg, VA "..This has been a great journey! I was conviced about the method after reading, 'Why Children Can't Read', but taking the course has really cemented the wonderful, and yet simple, theory and technique in my mind. I have seen progress with my students at a speed never encountered before, and they enjoy it! I'm proud to be one more therapist spreading the word. :)" - Monica Borovic, Leicester, - "..What a wonderful way to teach children an understanding of the "code" that can carry through their lives and give them the confidence to succeed! Please, though, don't ignore the need to involve and educate the parent if the child is to have a full experience!" - Patricia Sanner, Arlington, VA "..I have really enjoyed the training process online. It gives you the opportunity to train with children that you may not otherwise get from being in a lecture setting all day. And the greatest thing for those who can't take a week off to travel somewhere is that you can go at your own pace. This allows extra time in certain areas if needed." - julie castle, houston, TX "..It was great...thank you!" - Carrie Applegate, Frederick, MD "..This course was great exposure to the Phono-Graphix Training. The on-line sample students and sample lessons were quite informative and the lesson manuals are wonderful!" - Ann Lewis, Washington, DC "..This has been extremely helpful to me in improving the quality of one on one tutoring. The lessons were clearly presented. I find that many parents are specifically asking for Phono-graphix trained reading tutors. The online course was easier to fit into a busy schedule." - Nancy Skonberg, Washington, DC "..This course has been very informative and offers a wonderful, research based curriculum to assist non-readers become readers." - Velma Bennett, Sarasota, FL "..I think that this is a great course. It's an at-your-own-pace type of learning. They are prompt at answering questions and will take the time to make sure they understand your question in order to better help you. They are very patient people. I certainly recommend this course to anyone thinking of taking it." - Victoria Walters, Ladson, SC "..This course was very useful in learning the Phono-Graphix method. The variouse cartoons and voices helped to keep the learning process interesting and enjoyable. After learning the methods through this program I am able to understand the neccesity of such a program in teaching reading." - Dania Permesly, Sarasota, FL "..Highly recommended ! Thank you for the great opportunity!" - Olga Ways, Sarasota, FL "..Thank you for taking the time and trouble to do this inter-active version. It has been quite interesting. My spouse works long hours that change almost daily (he's a journalist), so scheduling a full week at a private school was getting to be quite a chore. I like computers, so I thought I'd give it a try. It has been a pleasure.
The one thing I was not prepared for, though, was having to get several kids together to practice on. Because it is summer and many people are away for vacations, it took me a little longer to assemble the cast necessary for practicing the lessons. I just determined to be patient and get hold of kids as I could. In fact, I had a rule, any kid walking into my house got to sit down and do a P-G lesson with me. I found kids from four to 12 to work with and that was actually a lot of fun.
Although I'm sure I still need a lot of practice, the kids who I worked with all enjoyed it and say they'll be coming back for more.
I am eager to begin working with P-G in my new tutoring business. Thanks so much for putting this on-line. (loved your credits, too)
Mary Peterson
" - Mary Peterson, Kensington, MD "..The course was very easy to follow and even fun! I recommend it for anyone interested in furthering their knowledge about teaching reading." - Ashley Thornton, Fayetteville, AR "..I am excited to start using Phono Graphix for real, but feel a little nervous too. I wish we could have your example lessons to refer back to as a refresher. Thanks, Lilah" - Lilah MacPherson, Abu Dhabi, none "..This is an excellent course for an excellent program!" - Natalie Hines, Honolulu, HI "..I think this on-line course is terrific! The lessons were interesting, engaging, and guided us step-by-step through the learning." - Dawn Harry, Maple Valley, WA ".. This is the first class I have taken on-line. I really liked the flexability of being able to "drop in" whenever I had the time to do so. For me, I have found, that at times I needed someone to direct me to the correct spot, to double check that I was using the correct tools, and to provide the immediated feedback that I evidently need. When I had questions, the responses were quick and clever.
I would definitely support anyone who is thinking of taking this course- it has been fun and my student that I have been working with throughout the lessons is making good progress and feels much better about her reading abilities." - Maryanne Wild, Lansing, IL "..I have thoroughly enjoyed the course.
I found the understanding has evolved as I went from stage to stage. As you teach it you begin to understand the methodology underlying the programme. At first I couldn't quite understand how this was not a phonic based system but now having gone from one end of the training to the other I can see that this is such a different way of teaching reading and spelling.
I have used many other programmes to teach reading but I realise that not only is this method logical, simple but it works. My pupils are coming on in leaps and bounds. They love the jargon, 'thats overlap', and orthographic tendency is a real favourite.
The speed of the programme is another aspect that I found quite unbelievable the children really can cope with more than I would have given them in the past.
Although the cours says 35 hours I am sure it has taken more time than that, but I wasn't counting!
" - Jane Gaudie, Winchester, Hants "..I had some confusion and difficulty teaching the weak vowel sounds and identification of Mr.Schwa. Perhaps a little more time could be spent on these areas. Overall the program was very interesting and the amazing thing was that as I was learning, I could see my student improving! Looking forward to applying this technique to more kids. Thanks all.
" - Mei Tan, Kuala Lumpur, Other "..For those working in a school setting with dyslexic children, this program is extremely beneficial! It provides background information and up-to-date knowledge of the techniques used to teach successfully." - Colleen Ruby, Stevenson, MD "..I took this course as part of becoming a trainer for PG. I had already had a year of experience teaching with this method but found this course quite refreshing both figuratively and literally. The systematic step-by-step approach of this course along with the first hand experience with Carmen and Geoffery made this course a success for me. Thank you for such a student-friendly program." - Megan Abshari-Means, Gaithersburg, MD "..I enjoyed taking the course on line. The staff were great in helping to answer any of my questions. At the beginning I was very unsure of the program, now after completing it I feel so much more confident. I think that now it is just a matter of helping the children and the parents. I am excited to be able to assist them through the Phono-Graphix program. I feel confident that if I do have questions the staff will be there, and that is a comforting feeling.
I recommend anyone who is interested to take the course, there is so much valuable information to learn. The Parent-Teacher magazine articles were absolutely fantastic, I really enjoyed them. They will always be a source of additional information.
Thank-you Carmen and Geoffrey, and the RA staff.
Sincerely,
Janice Pelechaty" - Janice Pelechaty , Fredericton , NB "..I enjoyed the course. I hope to get better at all of this with practice. I wish that I was able to refer to the course material when I have questions. I would love to play it all back. It would be great if you offered the course material on a CD-Rom or some other format so that we could view it again. I get better at things when I see them several times.
Thank you for the wonderful tools!" - Susan Ettenheim, Key Biscayne, FL "..I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. It's really effective and just makes plain sense. The instructional methodology has made teaching reading so much fun for me and the student(s)." - Valerie Maat, Chino, CA "..Working in Special Education, I'm constantly looking for programs that are going to help my students. In my present school, reading difficulties are very prevalent. What I liked about this course, was the logical method of presenting, teaching reinforcing letter-sound connections. I found that once my students had mastered the basic code, they were prepared to tackle the advanced code with its overlap and variations.
This also helped with their spelling. With improved reading and spelling skills, their self-confidence also improved. They were more willing to take risks since they now had tools to help them.
This was a very useful course for me. I feel that I also have tools to help me with my teaching. I would definitely recommend it to both parents and teachers." - Elda Fredette, Oakville, Ontario "..I was impressed with the online course. I would recommend it to anyone interested in receiving Phono-Graphix training." - Laura Lux, reston, VA "..I have heard and read many positive comments concerning the Phon-Graphix Reading Program and it has come as a very pleasant experience to be part of this. It is something which, I believe, can literally be a 'life-changing' experience for some pupils, particularly for boys who may be close to becoming 'disaffected' due to lack of progress using other methods.
The joy on a child's face as things 'click' and they realise they can read; the enthusiasm and hunger for books; the increased all-round confidence ( I have a pupil whose Mathematics has suddenly shown a huge improvement!) in a pupil's outlook and ability, all make it so worthwhile.
I am rally looking forward to putting the program into practice.Thankyou.
" - Sheila Baker, Bristol, South Gloucestershire "..This was a very interesting and informative course. Not having a speech background I have found this to be an easy way to learn how to teach children to read. I have just begun teaching kindergarteners and I can see myself using this program to help them learn to read." - Amy Feller, Reston, VA "..The course was very well done. It was presented in a way that was interesting and easy to follow." - Michele Marx, Hoboken, NJ "..As a Literacy Intervention Teacher working with students in grades 3 through 6, I am continually searching for methods that provide the greatest gains in the least amount of time. The students I work with are generally achieving at least 2 years below their current grade placement. Last year I received training in the Lindamood programs ((LiPS, Seeing Stars and V/V)and was pleased with the results, but found that many of my students did not need the articulatory feedback of the LiPS program. I was looking for a sequential program that would be less time consuming. Although I was interested in obtaining Phono-Graphix certification through a workshop format, these courses are not offered in my area. The on-line course allowed me to become certified without the added expense of travel and time away from my students. I enjoyed the flexibility of being able to complete the program during hours that suit my schedule." - Theresa Dobson, Kelowna, British Columbia "..
I really enjoyed doing the course and found it supported my practice. Although you can read the manual and lesson plans, I found it especially helpful to watch Carmen and Geoffrey "in action" in the clinic. It even helped me with my phrasing.
It was great that I was able to do the course over two years. I would have found a deadline very stressful as I have a very heavy work load!
The Programme is great and really works. It has helped lots of Primary and secondary aged pupils become readers, and more fluent readers. The children seemed to like it too!
Thank you
Elizabeth Goulston" - Elizabeth Goulston, Errogie, Inverness "..The online interactive Phono-graphix training course was extremely interesting, and the knowledge and skills I gained will be very useful in my role as a literacy intervention teacher. I appreciated the flexibility that the online format provided, allowing me to complete the course at my convenience.
Thank you, Geoffrey & Carmen McGuinness." - Heather Baptie, Kelowna, BC "..I first learned about Phono Graphix while looking for a tutor for my daughter. I had been tutoring her with Project Read from the International Dyslexic Association and had used Wilson for an adult learner. I was now looking for a program that cut past all the details that these programs have and find something that would concentrate more on helping the student with a strong foundation for deciphering the English language where they could be more independent in decoding. Learning more about Phono Graphix and observing my daughter's own progress with her tutor I found that this was the program that provided what I felt the others were missing. I than decided to become a certified tutor in this program too.
I found the online program ideal for my needs. It took a bit of time to get use to it and I did miss the feedback one gets in a classroom but the program and materials are well put together (miss having an index or page numbers though) and the program gives good precise direction. I also found the question and answers helpful. Being able to work at my own pace instead of an intensive 1 week workshop also gave me time to fully understand the program and finish with a strong feeling of understanding.
Thank you for developing this program, as a parent of a dyslexic child and a tutor, you have given me a wonderful tool that will help many learners in the years to come.
Marcia Gutierrez
" - Marcia Gutierrez, Elgin, IL "..The course has been great. If you are getting certified to be a therapist and are not presently teaching you need to make sure you have access to a student and a class. Luckily I had both.
I took this course with a lot of prior knowledge of Phono-Graphix. My son went to Michelle in Orlando for therapy a total of 30 weeks. I feel I learned a lot from Michelle sitting in on everyone of her lessons. I might not have felt as comfortable learning the material online if I had not had prior knowledge.
The course has been very interesting. I look forward to giving the children, who are unable to have their parents drive the 90 minutes each way to Orlando the benefits of Phono-Graphix." - Monica Young, Melbourne, FL "..It is great course - very thorough with a varied mode of presentation throughout. I personally began the course two years ago and had to leave only to return recently to finish it. I appreciated the support, professionalism and quality control aspects of the interactions with PG staff which have given me the grounding I need to move forward into offering my services as a PG Reading Specialist.
Bill Stapleton." - William Stapleton, Bradenton, FL "..Upon completion of the Phono-Graphix Training Course I can honestly say I'm equipped with the know how to teach students to read. I teach Special Education and all of my students are reading to the best of their cognitive ability. If it weren't for Carmen and Geoffrey's program my students wouldn't be reading on any level. Most special ed reading programs rely on abstract, unproven and unscientific methods to teach reading. I believe in the course so much that I paid for it out of my own pocket. You will not regret taking this course. Every educator in America should be required to take this course. Follow the techniques and your students will be reading. I cannot praise it enough. Their customer service is the best on the web. My questions and problems were/are always answered quickly and professionally.

Brooklyn, NY" - Annette Reitano, Brooklyn, NY "..It is absolutely fantastic! Highly recommend it! Go for it!" - Humara Abidi, london, Other "..I have thoroughly enjoyed the Phono-Grafix training course, not just for it's revolutionary transparency as a method for teaching children to read/remedial teaching but also as an eye opener in understanding the many difficulties that can beset children as they attempt to learn to read and spell. I particularly liked the sections on multi-syllabic words as this is a very much needed step in the teaching of reading and spelling.
Thank you.
" - Marie Joaquim, Aberdeen, Other "..This has been fabulous! First of all, I thank you for the Phono-Graphix program. When I first started a clinical practice 6 years ago, I searched for a good phonics program. I had good assessments and strategies for phonological awareness skills including rhyming, blending phonemes, segmenting, and manipulating phonemes. I had good tests and strategies for reading comprehension and fluency. I had good tests of children's word recognition, word analysis, and knowledge of the code. What I did NOT have however, was a comprehensive program that taught knowledge of the code in a way that was supported by the research on what works with struggling readers. So critical! Other than getting extensive Lindamood or Slingerland training, I could not find a program that I felt would help the students that I was working with, those that really struggled to learn to read and write. I already had extensive training, having worked at the University of Washington’s Multi-disciplinary Learning Disabilities Center. What I lacked was materials for this component of reading. I contacted several of my colleagues, many of whom were professors of education or special education in well-known universities, and no one could suggest such a program.
So I had to create one, using a variety of strategies such as word sorts, some activities designed by Rosner in which kids isolated and then blended phonemes within a word, mneumonics such as Letterland to help kids remember the letter sounds, etc. This worked quite well for me, and I was very successful at teaching struggling readers to read. Because of that success, I was asked to do workshops for many staffs and districts in my area and am an adjunct faculty member at two local universities. However, though teachers who take my classes claim they learn more about teaching reading than in any other course, I have become convinced that it is not impacting their practice. When I do follow-ups with them, they cannot recall the difference between phonological awareness and phonics. And though I teach them many activities that have been shown the be helpful for struggling readers and give them a lot of background about the necessary components to reading and writing, what they really need is a program that combines this research into a comprehensive beginning/remedial reading program. I believe they cannot retain and use this knowledge without it, certainly not from a one day or two day workshop. Most just do not have the time to create the materials themselves and organize the various activities into a workable program for their classes.
So...your program has made my clinical work easier and more effective and also provides hope for the many teachers looking for a user friendly and successful program for beginning and remedial reading. Thank you for combining so much of what we know works with beginning and struggling readers into your program. We are indebted to you!!
Thank you, also, for your book The Reading Reflex. This is such an easy program that parents can do with their children and make real progress! In addition, teachers who cannot afford the training for Phono-Graphix can use the book to train themselves in your methodology. Your well-written, clear, and organized presentation is well suited to parents. What a gem!
Finally, I enjoyed the on-line class very much. Especially helpful were the “observations” of Carmen and Geoff teaching. I’ve been using the program for two years now – first from the book Reading Reflex and over the last few months using the materials from the kit. I am most looking forward to adding the Parent Support Books to my practice. I know that this will increase the rate of success for my students which is critical – the clock is ticking for many of them as their peers continue to make gains!
Thank you!

" - Dawn Harry, Maple Valley, WA "..This course is straight forward and easy to understand. The methods make sense and have helped me teach many learning disabled children to read." - Patricia Ryan, San Francisco, CA "..I found the course to be very informative and instructive. The explanations in each lesson were very clear and the question-answer section at the end of each lesson was very helpful. The videos were particularly useful in modeling how the instructor applies each lesson with a student. I feel empowered and excited to get started with my own students. I highly recommend this course to anyone working in the literacy field." - Ellen Kaywin, Coral Gables, FL "..This class has given me a whole new way to look at reading and reading instruction. The concepts of the code are so logical and the skills children need are so fundamental. The information is presented in a clear, convincing way with easy to use materials. While the program is very structured, there is flexibility within the program to be creative and move the kids into “real” books very quickly to help them apply the rules and concepts. At first I felt as though Phono-Graphix was trying to teach a really old dog new tricks. Scratch Sheet Spelling and the abandonment of conventional syllabication were tough ideas to swallow. But in the end, the wisdom of it all won me over.
The on-line course was great because I was able to pace my work around my family. Although I should have anticipated it, (but didn’t), it was necessary to have access to children with whom to practice my new knowledge and implement the various lessons. Taking the class during the summer sometimes delayed the process since I did not have my classroom children at hand. An overall syllabus to help me gauge when I needed a student would have been helpful; but plan on needing a child, especially during sections 3 and 4. Certainly working with students is what brings the material to life.
I found I was often unable to complete the assignment within 15 minutes; I would be timed out, and once I lost my assignment when I went to submit it. It was very helpful to write especially long responses in a word document (and saving for future reference) then copying and pasting it in the response box before submitting my answers. Just a thought!
(Also, plan on several nights in front of the TV cutting the sound pictures and words necessary for the kit!!)
I hope you enjoy the class. It has been invigorating and I am eager to work with my students in September.
" - Marla Brazier, Reston, VA "..I found this course to be highly informative and educational. I now feel confident in my ability to teach my children as well as other children the phono-graphix method. If the truth be told this course actually cleared up some of my own confusion about the English language !!! Thank you Read America." - shelagh Forrest, gainesville, FL "..As a Montessori 3-6 year old teacher it was important for me to find a remedial program that would be easily implemented in my Montessori classroom. Phono-Graphix fit the bill. I would recommend this to all interested Montessori teachers." - Therese Hester, Denver, CO "..This course has provided a whole new way of thinking about how to teach reading. The assignments correlated well with the lessons and provided invaluable experience. I appreciated the fact that I could review the lessons whenever and wherever I wanted (including while out of the country)." - AnnaMarie Pederson, Detroit, MI "..£500 buys you the online certification course.
You register and get to meet others undertaking the course – a range of individuals including those with SEN positions, teachers, parents.
Two immediate sources of frustration are :
Waiting for the materials to arrive! I got straight into the programme but you can only go so far before needing the materials.
The second is the actual making the materials. You need to leave yourself at least a full day and probably a little more to complete the tedious exercise of cutting up card into letters and words and sorting them into the 36 trays that fit into a box. The relevance of the materials and the order in which they are placed only comes when you begin the programme proper. So grit your teeth and get on with the job of cutting and sorting. A guillotine is essential and have plenty of paper clips and elastic bands to hand.
Now for the programme: There is a very useful introduction explaining the structure of the course. Reference is made to the nature and four principles of the phonographix code and the required skills of segmenting blending and phoneme manipulation. We are introduced to the concept that letters are ‘sound pictures’. As you travel through the course materials these essential elements are repeated at regular intervals. They remain consistently important at whichever stage of the code.
There are four colour stages – the Basic Code Pink and Blue levels, followed by the Advanced Code Purple and the Multi syllable Yellow Stage. As you progress through each stage you are presented with a range of approaches. You are at one time the online teacher, on another occasion the pupil. At various stages you are expected to work with a pupil back at school. An accompanying lesson plan booklet and a folder of work sheets and suggested materials makes essential reading and offers additional guidance for your ‘live ‘work.
At each stage there are short tests to check knowledge gained and the opportunities to ask online questions. I like the fact that previous questions from other course members and the responses from either Carmen or Geoffrey McGuiness are there to be seen. Another variation is the virtual lesson. Watch Geoffrey McGuiness teach a struggling Anita to blend the word frog or watch Carmen using the advanced code introduce the picture sound oe to Donny and watch him map some of the various options oe, ow, oa o, o-e. Really useful teaching tips are clearly presented. In one of the question and answer sections Carmen refers to Donny as being a composite of two real students that she had taught over two years. She used her clinical notes to build a virtual student.
Articles written by Carmen and Geoffrey are accessible. These are from Parenteacher magazine. I particularly enjoyed the articles on spelling which is referred to as ‘expressive literacy instruction.’ The spelling methodology is to actively encourage errors by asking a child to use his code knowledge to look at all the various possibilities for representing each picture sound. Eg boat bote bowt bout. The child’s memory of reading the word may assist in making the decision on the accurate version. The articles present a compelling alternative to the traditional spelling through repetition in a drill exercise.
I must say that I have enjoyed the course. I must admit I was not a raw recruit having previously observed phonographix lessons at school delivered by teachers and LSAs trained in a the previous year by a trainer at the local education centre.
How I would have fared without this previous knowledge is hard to say.
As I mentioned in my introdution to fellow course members , I am currently co-ordinating an introduction of phonographix to 4 schools in a schools' cluster. The results of pupils undertaking the programme so far are very encouraging in terms of phonological skills and code knowledge leading to noticeable increases in reading accuracy, comprehension and spelling.
Stuart Ransom"..Despite several stops and starts, I have thoroghly enjoyed this course and have learned a lot from it. I would recommend it to others." - Tracey Marmion, Godalming, Other"..I really enjoyed the course, sometimes I didn't really want to stop! The reading and practice assignments are a good way to help you understand and apply the knowledge. Working with a real child also helps rather than just theory. Before I went on the course I had already read and used the PGX method with my child but it is really not quite the same as actually learning by doing the course. The interactive on-line course is definitely the way for those (not from UK or US)to be able to have the chance to learn this very simple, logical and practical approach to teaching children to read, write and spell. The kids I've worked with are making good progress. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be able to help my own son and also to help lots of other kids in future.
I will definitely be recommending this others. But, we have to be prepared to spend hours cutting up the little cards and I even laminated each one as well. The box with the little drawers is a good way of getting the cards organised." - IRENE WAI FONG LEE, GEORGETOWN, PENANG "..As a "seasoned" (actually very well seasoned!) teacher who has spent many years teaching the 'phonics code', I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to learn Nature of the Code taught in this Phono-Graphix course! It seems to make perfect sense and I can't wait to instruct my students in this code! I believe they will thrive as readers(and as spellers it turns out) using this method! This is the first time I have taken a course on line and I have found it to be very convenient time-wise; finally something productive to do when you awake in the middle of the night or have an evening home! I will admit that there were 2 times when I seemed to experience technological problems, but these were quickly addressed by Carmen and Geoff. The graphics in the course keep you awake and the pace does not drag. The lessons are clear and concise with many examples cited.
" - Marilyn Smith, Longmeadow, MA "..Phono-Graphix provides the teacher with the ability to help students immediately. Older students with reading difficulty seemed so amazed at this fresh and rewarding method of receiving help." - Clarke Glover, Houston, TX "..I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for having this course on line. The time invested in this program and the convenience from home has made a world of difference.
I am a teacher but wanted to learn Phono Graphix because of my daughter's learning difference. I used my 7 year old daughter to practice on and she went from reading below first grade level to now reading above first grade level. Slowly but surely she is moving in the right direction and it is ALL because of Phone Graphix.
Thank you very much.
Very Truly Yours,

Michigan" - Melissa Morris, Troy, MI "..I thoroughly enjoyed the format of this course. I like the flexibility of being able to think through things late at night--and reflecting on my notes of what happened during my day sessions with students was definitely useful.
I think it is fair to say that given the format, it will probably take students longer than the usual one-week time frame to complete the course. You'll need to think through what you are doing with a student sitting in front of you to complete some of the assignments. I spent roughly 40 hours total, reading, doing assignments and going back over sessions with students.
Thank you for making this available on the internet. It's convenient--straightforward and uncluttered." - Elizabeth Davis, Colorado Springs, CO "..I learned so much through this interactive course. I know that all of my students will benefit from the techniques that are taught. It amazes me how quickly I see gains in their reading now!" - Michelle Lundquist, Sanford, FL "..I have found the course invaluable and have enjoyed it immensely. It gave me the opportunity to brush up on my teaching practises. My confidence has been boosted and i have been inspired to be more adventurous.
The whole internet thing daunted me! So i learnt by discovery. Be it at times after i had made silly mistakes. But isn't that the way to learn?
The students i have taught and paticipating in this course has confirmed to me that i must keep trying to bring Phono-Grphix to the attention of everyone. This paradigm shift will happen!
So don't be a thinker and linger. Don't dally with P-G. It will enpower inspire and just think what you could do!" - Denise Gummer, Benfleet , Other "..I took the "in person" training last year for my initial certification. The online course was a great! I took this course as a refresher before beginning the trainer's training. I could pace myself and the lessons I had taught previously with my students were great resources for insight into the value of Phono-Graphix in the classroom." - Susan Francis, New Braunfels, TX "..I've really enjoyed this course - the Phono-Graphix system is so much more logical than any other system I've worked with, it makes sense and it's fun! I liked the amount of practicals we had to do - I'm sure we wouldn't have had that in a one week, face-to-face course. I also enjoyed seeing the system in action, eg in the videos of Michelle with Shelby. I've started working with 2 six-year-olds, and they've made huge progress already in two lessons! The second child is extremely distractable - and I couldn't believe how he was able to focus for a whole hour non-stop! The system obviously made total sense to him, which clearly hasn't happened before!
Thanks very much for the imput and answering all my questions - I know I've got more, so I hope I'll be able to continue sending them in as I think about it. Keep up the great work!" - Bronwen Williams, Auckland, Other "..The course was very informative and easy to follow. Thank you!" - Linda Bond, Easton, PA "..I have been pleasantly surprised to see the quality of training
available on-line. Once, I got through my doubts, I relaxed and was able to progress." - Rebecca Rodriguez, Houston, Harris "..Fantatic way of learning a program at your own speed and at your own convenience." - Celia Dubay, Washington, NJ "..This method of teachin reading makes sense. The teachers I am working with this summer are very excited. They have read the Reading Reflex, looked over lessons and tried techniques with their students the last month. I have used many of these strategies when tutoring students 1 on 1, but was unaware of why they worked. I wish I had this program 20 years ago when I first started teaching L.D. students. We are very dedicated in Citrus County to find the magic program that will work with our at risk students. 15 students will receive 20 days of instruction for a total of 60 hours of Phonographix and supplemental instruction utilizing this method. We are using The placement test as a pre-post test along with the TOWRE written by Dr. Torgeson as the pre/test. Students will receive ongoing assessment seekly with the DIBELS Assessment of Roland Goode. We are expecting great results. Principals and Curriculum Specialists are waiting for the results of intensive reading school. This program is already listed as a prime resource for are at risk students needing iii next year. I know I have not completed this course in a timely manner, nor practiced with students as much as you would probably like...but this online course will be valuable to our students and hopefully will make a difference for many students!! Thanks!! Vicki Fohrman" - Vicki Fohrman, Inverness, FL "..The course really simplifies reading the English language. All the principles taught are clear and concise and make perfect sense. English is a difficult language to read because of all the "exceptions to the rules" but this course clarifies and puts meaning into the way words are spelled and pronounced. The lessons are simple yet effective and the student quickly progresses which increases his\her confidence in their reading ability. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their English language skills." - Roxanne Salisbury, Swakopmund, Other "..The online Phono-Graphix course was excellent. It was very interactive with many hands on activities, as well as excellent articles. I enjoyed watching Carmen and Geoff work with some clients and provide good modeling and feedback to the clients. It also served to reinforce some similar techniques that I use with the small groups and clients that I see. It is definetly worth the time and effort!" - Catherine Patterson, Potomac, MD "..The course was excellent! The guided tour of this unique approach to teaching students how to read was well orchestrated to provide maximum exposure to concepts and techniques that can be used directly with students. I am looking forward to applying what I have learned.

Thankyou" - serena marinucci, sydney, nsw "..Had the course not been offered over the net, work and family commitments would have prevented me from doing it - thank you. Phono Graphix has revolutionized my teaching. I have been teaching for 18 years now, 12 specifically in literacy and have constantly been searching for approaches and strategies that would move my pupils on successfully - I have now found what I have been searching for! Phono Graphix has had the most dramatic, positive effects on my pupils. The on-line course has been enjoyable and challenging, thought-provoking and informative. The presentation has been varied and fun, something I was not expecting from a literacy course! The frequent, construtive feedback was most helpful and supportive, although I did experience a few technical difficulties! I am currently recommending Phono Graphix in all my schools and am using the approach with all my pupils - what more can I say?! Jean Coyle-Larner - a very satisfied student!" - Jean Coyle-Larner, London, . "..The course was excellent. The child I have been working with throughout my training has made tremendous progress in his reading." - Vivian Harrison, Oceanside, CA "..Hello,
An asset in taking this on-line course is the access to the materials over a length of time while one actually works with clients. I have gone back to the materials presented by C & G many times to answer questions that I have and to pick up many important details that I missed or did not understand when I went through the program the first time. I am hoping that after I submit this comment I will still be able to review some of the presentations." - Marie Prins, Colborne, Ontario "..I enjoyed the course very much, got a great deal more out of it than I thought. The speedy replies from the course co-ordinators were much appreciated. First time I have done an online course and it worked well for me.
Congratulations to the McGuiness clan for working out such a good programme." - Pamela Corbyn, Spearwood, Other "..This online training course is wonderful! I have taken online classes/trainings in other areas and they pale in comparison to this one. The use of sounds, cartoons, videaos, and other media (i.e. articles) keeps it very interesting." - Kira Hughes-Rivera, San Diego, CA
